I introduced the name Yana Vlaaeva in a very stupid way, but I have been so blown away by her. I went to the Broadstairs Festival four times and saw so many fine people including Bridget St. John who sang better than she used to at nearly eighty. The go to place for me is the Sailing Club sessions from 3-5 run by Morag Butler who runs the best Folk Club in Kent, Roslyn Court, which has great guests every Thursday the first hour of which you can catch online.
At the festival she hosts a concert every day always with great guests. On the final day, she had the fine fiddle player Laura Targett as the headlined but before then Yana performed.
I’ve loved Bulgarain folk singing as much as anything and have a number of albums including the obligatory Mysteres de Voix Bulgare and the Trio Bulgarka. So I was shocked when this beautiful woman standing a metre or so in front of me and began to sing just like one of the tracks of my albums. She sang so beautifully and was by far the best act I saw all week and indeed was the best singer I’ve heard for a very long time.
