This week’s features may be the most varied triumvirate we’ve ever assembled!
The featured album (yes, album for a change!) is Glasgow Songwriter Round – 2 Year Anniversary – Live At King Tut‘s. it’s a compilation of songs recorded, as the title suggests, at the monthly Glasgow Songwriter Round at King Tut’s, and it includes a few artists that we’re very fond of, and a few we didn’t know. But we also choose it in honour of all the nights across Scotland – the acoustic sessions, the open mics – where all kinds of singer-songwriter and musician get to try out their work on appreciative audiences of their peers. And to all the people behind the scenes keeping these nights running, we raise a glass. Let us know if you’ve got a local music night of note and we’ll give it a mention on a future show.
The featured archive album is about to turn 50 and it’s a favourite on the Hesperus, though it feels that in the wider world Stephen Bishop is rarely mentioned for his solo records. True enough, he did enjoy his biggest successes writing songs for movies, but we’re turning the clock back to his debut album Careless.
And the featured songwriter is going back about as far as we’ve ever gone. Only Burns himself, born in 1759, is fractionally earlier. This week we celebrate his contemporary Carolina Oliphant, Lady Nairne, born in August 1766, 260 years ago. Iain will provide more background information when you tune in.
It was the poet William Cowper who wrote in 1785, “Variety is the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavour”.
This episode will appear here on the website – in all its spiciness – at 7pm on Sunday.
